    Synthesis and Characterization of DGEBA Epoxy and Novolac Epoxy Blends and Studies on their Curing and Mechanical Behavior

  • Abstract

    Blends of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) and low molecular weight Novolac epoxy resin were prepared at various Novolac Epoxy resin concentrations. The viscosity of blends was found to be in decreasing order with increasing Novolac Epoxy resin content. These blends were cured by stoichiometric amount of modified polyamide hardener. Their curing behavior was investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry. Water vapour permeability and tensile strength of blends decreased with increase in Novolac Epoxy resin, except the blend containing 10% Novolac epoxy. Damping factor and storage modulus of blends, studied by using dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer, indicated superior mechanical properties of blend containing 10% Novolac Epoxy resin.
